Learning NLP in Birmingham

NLP Meta Model

In the mid 1970′s  Richard Bandler and John Grindler studied various psychotherapists who had great success in helping their patients.
At the time they noticed there was a lot written about how people were “broken” but nothing about how to fix them!
They wanted to discover what was the difference in what these therapists did to get consistent results.
They looked at the language structure of these therapists, how they interacted with their patients, the questions they asked and came up with model of language which became known as the meta model.

NLP Meta Model Language

The meta model was basically the art of using language to clarify meaning. Misunderstandings can happen because the same words can have entirely different meanings to each individual .
For example ask a few people what “A relationship” means to them you will get different answers as they will be making their choices based on numerous factors and influences in their life.
Someone who has been cheated on will describe “A relationship” differently than one who values excitement above all else in their relationship.

Meta

Meta, the word itself comes from Greek and means above and beyond.
In the Birmingham NLP and Hypnosis Practice Group we visit parts of the meta model on our practice days and overtime understanding and utilisation of the NLP Meta Model happens easily.
It can be used to influence, to excel  in interviews to sell and improve business and performance in sports.

NLP Trainer and Master Practitioner Debbie Williams who leads the Birmingham NLP practice group values teaching concepts in a way which is easy to grasp the basics.

Debbie creates a way to remember the simple overall concept of the meta model so you can use it and get fantastic results immediately and overtime if you choose to you can learn it in more depth and become highly skilled.

In the early days of NLP is was quite often described as a manipulative tool yet as the creators would state it’s neither good or bad, it’s the intention of the users – it’s a bit like knives we use them every day to cut up our food, and they’re very very useful in that context yet a knife in the hands of a madman can be horrendous.

NLP to create the life you want

So NLP can be used to create the life you want and to change your emotion or state quite quickly

When Richard Bandler started in the early 70s he noticed that psychology had therapists fighting about who had the correct approach yet none of them failed to produce a single consistent result – so he took a different road, he didn’t look at what went wrong or guessing – he looked at what works no matter how and pretty much if a strategy worked in one situation could it work in another and something that would be deemed as inappropriate could actually be a benefit in another.

For example procrastination – you think about it if you could procrastinate of having that cake yes, yes I’ll have it later or I’ll have it tomorrow that certainly would help with any weight loss goals would it not, he also looked at what good therapists did that helped find solutions for their clients.

NLP Strategies

NLP is not concerned how people process stuff in the past or how they’ll process stuff in the future it’s what they do at this present moment, how do they manifest this problem.

For example I was going to take over from you for a day what do I need to say, imagine and do?

NLP can also illicit a strategy of somebody who knows how to get over that, finding out what did they do and the steps they took to overcome that particular issue.

NLP and Phobias

With phobias Richard noticed the people who had cured themselves got to a point where they had got so fed up and they stopped thinking about what actually frightened them.

They looked at themselves and thought this is ridiculous and this was the first start of the dissociating from the problem and finding humour in it.

You see if you’re looking for problems you’ll also ways find them if you continually ask well what will go wrong then it will - whereas if you ask well what do I need to learn to move on, it starts the brain to focus on a different outcome.

Richard Bandlers’s  NLP changing bad feelings exercise:

Step 1 – think about someone who annoys you, intimidates or irritates you.
Make an image and see them looking at you in whatever way they do when bothering you, hear them say what they say and notice the bad feeling start to happen in your body.
Then take this image and make it black and white, move it off into the distance and make it much smaller, 1/8 of its size and put a clowns nose on his face, hear him say whatever they say but hear  it in Mickey Mouse’s or Donald Duck’s tonality.
Notice how you feel now and then distract yourself for a few moments and think of them  again, you’ll still be feeling differently about this person.

NLP for mastery over your mind

Achieving mastery over your mind is about developing new habits and skills and getting used to mentally running your brain in the way you want to run it.

Many people’s life can be crippled by traumatic experiences that really are just continually being played as memories it not that it was bad enough happening the first time that your brain has to present it to you over and over again.

As you put the bad memories into the past you can leave them there for good. One way to overcome a negative relationship is to stack up all the times they treated you badly and we’ll run that through this exercise because as we link them together then we’ll take you through thresholds where it’s a case of never go back, no way. So remember every bad thing that they did and as we remember them all at once if you played them together back to back on a movie screen and if you were to watch it over and over again until you literally get sick of them.
